Lectures/Presentations

“From Photo to Fabric” (PowerPoint Lecture)

Discover a simple method of transforming your photo into a fabric art quilt. Like a jigsaw puzzle, the pieces come together to replicate the photo and the sewing is also the quilting in the project.

“Needles and Thread” (PowerPoint Lecture)

The fabrics we sew on, the threads we sew with, and the way we sew have all changed over the years. Needles and thread have changed to accommodate these trends. This primer identifies types of needles and thread, what each is best used for, and helps troubleshoot potential problems.

“Faces in Fabric” (Power Point Lecture)

Tempted to tackle a portrait? Never fear – you need not be an artist. A photo provides the starting point. This presentation reveals the process of turning that photo into a fabric portrait. Accompanying portrait quilts and handouts will inspire and guide your efforts.

Trunk Show: Flower Power”

Enjoy a visual journey of “Photo to Fabric” floral and landscape quilts created by Mary Alice and discover how bits and pieces of your stash could result in your own creative travels

Trunk Show: A Quilter’s Journey”

Experience a visual journey of quilts – from traditional to art, made by Mary Alice. Be inspired and challenged for your own travels in the quilt world.

Trash to Treasure” (Combination PowerPoint/Trunk Show)

What would you do if someone “gifted” you a bag of scraps and challenged you to do something with it – and tossing was not an option? Mary Alice shares her journey in that decision. (Fortunately, or unfortunately, the bags keep coming!)

Faces in Fabric

Portrait study of Marilyn Monroe done in five levels of value

Who says you need to be an artist to draw a portrait?  With the help of a prepared pattern of Marilyn, freezer paper, repositionable fusible web and a few carefully chosen fabrics, we will learn the process of turning a photo into an artistic fabric portrait.  You will learn how to transform your own photos to expand your creative quilting journey.  No need to pack a sewing machine either since the sewing and finishing will be done at home!

Class Length: 6 hours

Scrappy Play

Time to relax, let go of the stress of satisfying the “quilting police” and have some fun in our sewing rooms! In the process we might use up some bits and pieces and rediscover our inner child. Bring your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies – no fabric – that’s provided. We’re too attached to our own fabric to play with it!
